Make Your Own Bird Food – Here’s How
It’s best to make bird food in the kitchen, as a stove is needed.
- Put the coconut oil in the pot and warm it over low heat.
- Place the seed mix in a bowl.
- Once the oil is completely melted, pour it over the seed mix and mix well.
- Fill silicone molds or a cup with the mixture.
- Tie the string into loops and press into the still-liquid mixture, or insert the stick into the cup.
- Let everything harden and then carefully remove from the molds.
Hanging Bird Food
Once the bird food is ready, you can place it directly in bushes and trees in the garden or hang it near or on a birdhouse. For balconies, it’s best to position the food so that it’s easily accessible to birds and hangs securely. Especially in spring or winter, when the need for energy-rich food is high, it’s a good idea to hang several birdseed balls so that all birds get something. But even in summer or fall, blackbirds, tits, or sparrows appreciate help in finding food. Only on very warm days might the birdseed balls dissolve or melt, as coconut fat begins to melt at 73 degrees Fahrenheit.
