Whether for the holidays or as a treat in between, if you want to do something good for your dog, you should also pay attention to healthy ingredients. It’s best if you can decide what and how much ends up in your pet’s stomach. In the video from our series “DIY for Pets,” myHOMEBOOK and PETBOOK show you how to make healthy dog treats without baking.

Whether it’s Easter, Christmas, or just a treat in between, we want to do something nice for our dogs. Unfortunately, many store-bought treats not only have a high calorie count but also contain ingredients like grains and sugar. Especially for dogs prone to obesity, it’s important to focus on healthy ingredients and know what’s in the food. myHOMEBOOK and PETBOOK, together with Susanne from “ikarusdoodle,” show how to easily make healthy dog treats without baking. What to watch out for and what you need, you will find in this article. The video above provides a step-by-step guide where we present two recipes for healthy treats!

Make Your Own Dog Treats – Here’s How

Instructions for Sugar-Free Coconut Balls

These little gourmet balls for dogs look like fancy pralines but are completely sugar-free. However, they are not low in calories and should be fed sparingly. Here’s how to make them:

  1. Mix oatmeal and nutritional yeast together.
  2. Add peanut butter and coconut oil, and knead the mixture with your hands.
  3. Fill a shallow dish with coconut flakes.
  4. Moisten your hands and form small balls.
  5. Roll the balls in coconut flakes.
  6. Place the coconut balls in the refrigerator for at least half an hour.

Instructions for Sweet Potato Pralines

Depending on the size of your dog, you can choose larger or smaller molds for the pralines. If you don’t have silicone molds, you can simply form balls as in the previous recipe. Just add a bit more oatmeal to make the dough firmer. Here’s how to make the pralines:

  1. Cut the sweet potato into small pieces, cook until soft, and let cool.
  2. Add rice flakes, nutritional yeast, and peanut butter, and mix everything with a fork.
  3. Add oatmeal until a firm dough forms.
  4. Check the dough’s consistency with a fork; the tines should stand up.
  5. Fill the molds with dough and scrape off any excess with a knife.
  6. Place the molds with dough in the refrigerator or freezer for at least one hour.
  7. Carefully remove the pralines from the mold – done!

How to Store the Dog Treats

The dog treats can be stored in the refrigerator and should be consumed within a few days. If you want to keep the treats for your four-legged friend longer, you can also store the coconut balls and sweet potato pralines in the freezer. Although these treats contain healthy ingredients, they are still calorie-dense, so we recommend feeding a maximum of one to two pieces per day for small dogs and three to four pieces for larger dogs.
