Birds appreciate a food supply in the garden or on the balcony year-round. A nice side effect: you can observe blackbirds, tits, and others up close. In the video from our series “DIY for Animals” by myHOMEBOOK and PETBOOK, we show how to build a bird feeder yourself.
If you enjoy watching birds up close and want to support them in their search for food, you should place a bird feeder in your garden or on your balcony. Whether in winter, when seeds and insects are scarce, or in spring during the rearing of young birds–many birds like tits, starlings, and sparrows gladly accept the food supply. myHOMEBOOK and PETBOOK, together with Susanne from “ikarusdoodle“, show how to easily build such a bird feeder yourself. Find out how to do it and what you need in this article. The video above provides a step-by-step guide for a bird feeder made from branches. Enjoy building it!

Bird Feeder–What You Need
Depending on how you want to design the bird feeder, you’ll need appropriate branches. We chose birch branches. For the project, you will need:
Material
- Birdseed
- Branches (preferably of the same thickness)
Tools
- Cordless screwdriver
- Drill
- Saw
- Screws
- Pencil
- Measuring tool
Building a Bird Feeder–Here’s How
Before starting the project, you should saw the branch pieces to the desired length. You can decide freely–depending on how large you want the bird feeder to be. Here’s how:
- First, build two frames for the basic structure of the bird feeder. You will need a total of eight branches for this.
- Pre-drill and then screw everything together, placing additional branches side by side as a kind of floor on the lower level.
- In the next step, select shorter branches for the four corner posts. Screw these to the frames as well. The basic structure is now complete.
- Next, focus on the roof. You will need five branches for this. Screw two together for each gable and place a brace between them. Then attach the roof to the basic structure.
- Finally, screw many branches at a 90-degree angle and place them on the roof brace, then secure them.
