Tigers are strong, fast, and feared hunters. But how old do these wild predators actually get? The answer is surprising. PETBOOK explains what affects their life expectancy and how old the oldest tiger in the world lived to be.
How Old Do Tigers Get in the Wild?
Tigers can reach an age of up to 15 years in the wild. However, their actual life expectancy heavily depends on their living conditions. While some animals die at a young age, particularly healthy and successful hunters can live significantly longer.
Key factors for life expectancy include the availability of food, diseases, injuries, and human influences. In regions with little prey, they must expend more energy hunting and often suffer from hunger. Severe injuries from defensive prey or the loss of important teeth can prevent a tiger from hunting successfully. Additionally, habitat loss, traffic accidents, and poaching shorten the lifespan of many animals.1
How Old Do Tigers Get in Captivity?
Tigers live significantly longer in captivity than in the wild. While wild animals usually reach an age of up to 15 years, they can live up to 26 years in zoos and wildlife parks. The main reason for this is the better living conditions. In human care, the animals receive regular food, medical care, and protection from poaching and territorial fights.
In the wild, the life expectancy of tigers is greatly influenced by external factors. These include food scarcity, diseases, injuries during hunting, and the loss of their habitat due to humans. Poaching and conflicts with humans also often shorten the lives of these big cats. In captivity, many of these risks are eliminated, allowing them to reach their natural life expectancy more frequently.
Where Do Tigers Live?
Tigers live in various regions of Asia. Their natural range today extends over parts of South, Southeast, and East Asia. Wild tigers are found in countries such as India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and China.
In the past, these wild animals were spread over much larger areas. However, due to poaching and habitat loss, they have lost about 95 percent of their original range. Many populations now live in protected national parks and reserves.
Tigers are highly adaptable big cats. They inhabit tropical rainforests, grasslands, mangrove swamps, and even cold forest areas with snowy winters. Key to their habitat are sufficient prey, dense vegetation, and water sources.

What Do Tigers Eat?
Tigers are pure carnivores. As the largest big cats in the world, their diet mainly consists of larger mammals. These include deer, wild boars, wild cattle, and roe deer. However, the prey they hunt depends heavily on their habitat.
The Amur tiger in Russia, for example, often feeds on wild boars, red deer, and Siberian roe deer. Bengal tigers in India primarily hunt various deer species and wild boars. If the food supply is insufficient, they also attack smaller animals such as monkeys, birds, fish, or reptiles.
During the hunt, these predators rely on their camouflage and patience. They sneak up on their prey as unnoticed as possible and attack from a short distance. Despite their strength, not every hunting attempt ends successfully.
After a successful hunt, tigers can consume enormous amounts of meat at once. They often rest for several days afterward and repeatedly return to their prey. As apex predators, they play an important role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems.
The Oldest Tiger in the World
One of the oldest documented animals of the species is the tigress Bengali. Guinness World Records confirmed her in July 2021 as the oldest living tiger in captivity. At that time, she was 25 years and 319 days old and lived at the Tiger Creek Animal Sanctuary in the U.S. state of Texas.
Later court documents revealed that Bengali was euthanized on May 9, 2022. An update to the Guinness entry has not yet been made.2
