Cow Cuddling Is Becoming a Global Trend Cow cuddling is increasingly becoming a trend worldwide. PETBOOK explains what exactly is behind this phenomenon, who benefits from it, and what to keep in mind.
In a time when stress, sensory overload, and constant digital availability are part of everyday life, many people are seeking alternative ways to slow down. A new, seemingly unusual trend has emerged: cow cuddling. What initially sounds curious appears to be a surprisingly effective method for relaxation and stress relief for many people. Cow cuddling is gaining popularity, especially in German-speaking regions, but also in other parts of Europe and North America.
What is Cow Cuddling?
In cow cuddling, also known as “Cow Cuddling,” people spend time with cows–they pet them, lean against them, or even lie down with them in the grass. These encounters usually take place on farms specifically opened for this purpose, where calm, socialized animals live that are accustomed to human contact.
Cows are naturally calm, large animals with slow breathing and a gentle nature. They have a body temperature of about 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit–a fact that makes cuddling with them feel particularly pleasant. Their equanimity and steady heartbeat have a calming effect on people. Many participants report an almost meditative experience.
The trend originated in the Netherlands, where the so-called “koe knuffelen” (“cow hugging”) was introduced as a therapeutic practice. Meanwhile, numerous farms in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland offer similar programs–often as part of “farm vacations,” where city dwellers work or relax on the farm for a weekend.
Cow Cuddling for Stressed City Dwellers
In principle, cow cuddling is suitable for anyone who likes animals–especially cows. It is particularly popular among stressed city dwellers, people with burnout symptoms, or families with children seeking an authentic connection to rural life. Cow cuddling is also increasingly used in animal-assisted therapy, for example, for people with anxiety disorders or autism.
Psychologists emphasize the effect of animal proximity on the human nervous system. The physical warmth and sense of security create an atmosphere of trust and calm. Unlike dogs or cats, cows react even less to human behavior, which is a new experience for many.

Criticism and Ethical Conflicts
As with any trend, there are also critical voices. Animal rights activists warn against viewing cows merely as wellness tools. It is crucial that the animals allow contact voluntarily and are not overwhelmed or stressed. Reputable providers ensure that the animals have enough retreat space and do not force cuddling.
Additionally, it should be considered that cows are generally regarded as livestock in our society, typically serving milk or meat production. Some critics see the cuddling trend as a romanticized view of agriculture. Others argue that such encounters can lead to greater awareness and respect in dealing with livestock.
