Compact, smart, and full of energy: The Smooth Fox Terrier is a dog for true go-getters. With its alert gaze, muscular build, and tireless drive, it captivates not only hunters but also athletic families. However, anyone who brings this charming daredevil into their home gets more than just a pet—they get a thinking, active partner who wants to be challenged.
Origin
The Smooth Fox Terrier hails from Great Britain and was originally bred for underground hunting, particularly for foxes—hence its name (English “Fox” = fox, Latin “Terra” = earth). As early as the mid-19th century, the first nearly white representatives of this breed were showcased at dog shows. Its slender, long-legged physique allowed it to enter narrow fox dens and work independently.
In 1876, the Fox Terrier Club in England established the first breed standard. Just a few years later, the Fox Terrier gained popularity in Germany, where the German Fox Terrier Club was founded in 1889. Today, the FCI recognizes two variants of the Fox Terrier: Smooth and Wire—differing only in coat type but adhering to the same standard (FCI Group 3, Section 1, Standard No. 169).
While the Smooth Fox Terrier was initially more popular, the wire-haired variant later gained attention due to fashion trends. Today, the smooth type is rarer but still appreciated by hunters and active dog owners.
Appearance & Coat
The Smooth Fox Terrier is a medium-sized, long-legged terrier with an almost square build and athletic appearance. It has a straight back, an upright tail, and a muscular neck, on which it carries its head alertly and proudly.
Characteristic features include its small, forward-folding ears, elongated snout, and always attentive expression. Its eyes are lively and curious—a typical trait of its spirited nature.
The smooth, dense coat lies close to the body and is easy to care for. The base color is always white, combined with black, tan, or black-and-tan markings. With a shoulder height of up to 39 to 40 cm and a weight of about 7.5 to 8 kg, it is among the lighter, agile hunting dogs.
Character & Temperament
The Smooth Fox Terrier is a spirited, alert, and highly adventurous dog. It combines hunting passion with playfulness and intelligence. Its energy seems inexhaustible, and its drive for movement is pronounced—quiet hours on the sofa are not among its preferred activities.
It is considered brave, independent, and eager to learn. It approaches strangers with curiosity and openness, without being aggressive. It generally gets along well with children if they share its drive for movement. As a playmate, it proves to be enduring and inventive.
Its territorial nature makes it an attentive guardian—though not overly prone to barking. Good socialization during puppyhood lays the foundation for harmonious interactions with other dogs and people.
Training
Like many terriers, the Smooth Fox Terrier comes with a dose of stubbornness—paired with a high willingness to learn. Early and consistent, yet loving, training is essential to prevent unwanted behavior.
It questions rules, tests boundaries, and remembers any form of inconsistency. Positive reinforcement through praise, play, or treats is particularly motivating. Attending a dog school experienced in handling hunting-motivated breeds is recommended.
With a strong bond to humans, the Fox Terrier can also be enthused for demanding tasks such as rescue dog work or trick training.
Proper Care & Maintenance
The Smooth Fox Terrier is not a dog for couch potatoes. It needs plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and ideally a task. Dog sports such as agility, flyball, or obedience are ideal, as are long hikes or athletic activities like jogging or cycling.
It feels comfortable both in the countryside and in the city, provided it gets enough exercise and activity. Pure apartment living without appropriate stimulation is not suitable.
The Fox Terrier is easy to care for when it comes to its coat: Regular brushing is sufficient to keep the short, dense fur clean and healthy. It’s important to get it accustomed to this from puppyhood.
Nutrition
As an active dog with high energy needs, the Smooth Fox Terrier requires a nutrient-rich, balanced diet—preferably with a high meat content. Whether BARF, dry, or wet food: The quality of the ingredients and a composition tailored to age, weight, and activity level are crucial.
When feeding raw (BARF), special attention should be paid to the nutrient balance to avoid deficiencies or oversupply. High-quality commercial food options without sugar, artificial additives, or excessive grain content are also suitable.
An age-appropriate food transition—from puppy to adult and later to senior food—supports long-term health.

Susceptibility to Certain Diseases
The Smooth Fox Terrier is generally considered very robust. However, some health risks are known, especially genetically predisposed neurological disorders such as ataxia or myelopathy, which affect the spinal cord.
Occasionally, eye diseases also occur. Responsible breeding with appropriate health tests for the parent animals is therefore essential.
Regular preventive check-ups at the vet, a healthy diet, sufficient exercise, and mental stimulation promote a long and healthy life—not infrequently, Fox Terriers live between 13 and 16 years.
