In bad weather, it’s important to dress warmly. This applies not only to humans but also to dogs. Especially on rainy days, they should wear waterproof materials to protect against moisture and cold. PETBOOK shows which raincoats for dogs are worthwhile and what minimum requirements should be considered before purchasing.

The range of dog raincoats is very large. They are available from very cheap to quite expensive. However, there are also significant differences, as not every product is recommended. If you want to get a raincoat for your dog, you should consider a few points to ensure your four-legged friend truly benefits.

In our comparison, eleven raincoats for dogs are listed that meet certain criteria. These include materials, size adjustability, lining, breathability, waterproofness, and other extras. Below, you will find more information about the individual products and the requirements for a dog raincoat.

Material of the Dog Raincoat: What to Consider

Depending on the breed and type, there are naturally differences between dogs. Some get cold faster, while others do not. Therefore, you should know in advance whether the raincoat for the dog should be lined or unlined. Some dogs, for example, have thick undercoats, so lining might be too much for them. Essentially, it’s about keeping the dog dry and protecting against possible illnesses or colds, even though dogs are quite robust.

The outer material of a dog raincoat should be made of polyester, nylon, PVC, softshell, or polyamide. These are easy to care for, water-repellent, and partially elastic or stretchable.

The inner material should not be neglected either. As mentioned, there are lined and unlined models. The choice of a raincoat with or without lining depends on the breed and type of dog. The advantage is obvious: raincoats with lining keep the dog warm. However, they can become problematic on warmer days, as the dog might get too warm over time. Coats with removable inner linings are practical. Ideally, the inner material should be made of polyester or cotton.

Size and Fit Also Matter

Before purchasing, you should also consider the size of the raincoat. The most important thing is that the dog feels comfortable in it. Therefore, the coat should not be too tight, have no dangerous areas, and generally ensure an optimal fit. Three measurements are crucial: back length, neck circumference, and chest circumference. To make your choice easier, PETBOOK has created a table for guidance.

[table “1” not found /]

It should be noted that these are merely orientation values and not fixed size specifications. Measuring the dog beforehand is the safest way to find the optimal raincoat for them. If you want to shop in person, the seller can also advise you. However, if you prefer online shopping, it’s advisable to buy the raincoat a bit larger in case of doubt, as you can tighten it if necessary or return and exchange it.

These Extras Should Not Be Missing

Besides size and materials, there are also other extras that should be considered before purchasing a dog raincoat. Among other things, it’s important that the coat is breathable. Therefore, you should choose a model that meets these criteria to avoid unnecessary heat buildup. For evening walks, reflectors on the coat are also recommended.

Next is the closure. There are several options: Velcro, zipper, clip closure, and belt. The first option is recommended because you can adjust the size more individually, making it more comfortable for the dog. Raincoats with zippers are also effective, but you should ensure you buy the optimal size, as there is less room for adjustment. Clip closures are also quite popular and usually infinitely adjustable, which is why this option is very common. A belt closure is also conceivable, especially for dogs that don’t like having something pulled over their heads. Due to the holes in the belt, you can also easily adjust the size here.

Almost every dog has a collar or harness. This is especially important for the leash. To leash the dog with a raincoat on, there should be an opening for the carabiner or D-ring–a so-called collar pass-through. But there are also coats with their own loop for the leash.

The Ideal Raincoat for the Dog

Based on the criteria for the optimal dog raincoat, PETBOOK has selected 11 models from various manufacturers that are particularly recommended:

The filling, however, is 100 percent TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane). The jacket can be adjusted in the back area thanks to a buckle. There are Velcro fasteners on the sides for stabilization, so the dog’s raincoat doesn’t constantly slip. Kurgo “North Country”

The next raincoat for dogs is the “North Country” model from the American company Kurgo. The selection is somewhat limited, as the jacket is not available in all sizes. It is only available for dogs with a back length between 35 and 61 centimeters, a chest circumference between 46 and 99 centimeters, and a neck circumference between 41 and 58 centimeters. The color selection is also limited to black. However, there are more extras to consider.

The surface is made of durable ripstop material and weather-resistant polyester, making it automatically water-repellent. The interior is fleece-lined. In addition to reflective piping, there is also an LED light on the back of the raincoat, which is intended to provide more visibility and thus safety. A zipper is integrated at the top, serving as an opening for the leash and harness. The raincoat can be fastened or stabilized with a clip closure.

  • outer and inner material made of ripstop, polyester, and fleece
  • water-repellent jacket
  • reflective piping
  • relatively limited size selection
  • LED light on the jacket
  • only available in black
  • zipper access for the leash

Thus, the coat is suitable for various dog breeds.

It is also practical that the belly side is closed, and elastic fixing bands for the hind legs are integrated. There is also an opening for the collar to leash the dog. The belly strap with a click closure is infinitely adjustable. The reflective piping also ensures a safe walk in the dark. The dog raincoat is washable at 30 degrees.

  • reflective piping
  • infinitely adjustable belly strap
  • quite a flexible jacket
  • covers up to the hindquarters

Furthermore, it comes in several fits for dogs with a back length between 28 and 80 centimeters. Wolters also offers custom fits for pugs, bulldogs, and dachshunds.

The name of the model is not without reason. Thanks to the nylon surface, the raincoat is quite robust and tear-resistant. The lining is made of lightweight mesh material. A stretch band is integrated into the belly area, enhancing wearing comfort. The Ecorepel impregnation ensures that the jacket is water- and especially dirt-repellent. Additionally, the materials are PFC-free, meaning without harmful per- and polyfluorinated chemicals. There is a zipper for the leash in the neck area. And as with all good raincoats, reflectors are included.

  • material mostly made of nylon

It is suitable for dogs with a back length between 35 and 80 centimeters, a neck circumference between 36 and 68 centimeters, and a chest circumference between 24 and 108 centimeters. The jacket is available from 22 euros.

The main components of the coat are polyurethane and polyester, making it wind- and water-repellent. There is a buckle on the belly strap that is infinitely adjustable. The collar is quite high, so the neck area of the dog is protected from cold and moisture. There are also two zippers at the top to leash the dog at the collar or harness and two leg loops for the hind legs. The raincoat is suitable for the washing machine at 30 degrees.

  • coat material made of polyurethane and polyester

Rukka “Overall Protect”

As the model name “Overall Protect” suggests, this Rukka coat is a full-body rain protection available in yellow, olive, and black. It is made for dogs with a back length between 25 and 65 centimeters, a neck circumference of 37 to 73 centimeters, and a chest circumference between 43 and 92 centimeters. However, the legs are also crucial here. The overall is suitable for dogs with a front leg length between 12 and 37.5 centimeters and hind legs between 15.5 and 37.5 centimeters. The collar is so high that it resembles a hood.

According to the manufacturer, the dog raincoat is made of 96 percent polyester and four percent elastane, protecting against wind and water. The seams are tightly sealed or taped. Since the waist, collar, and neckline are adjustable, the coat can be individually adapted to the dog. Reflective piping is also integrated to make evening walks safer. As with all good coats, there is an opening for the leash. This model should be washed separately at 30 or 40 degrees.

  • coat made of polyester and elastane

Ruffwear “Sun Shower”

Another provider with raincoats in their range is Ruffwear. The “Sun Shower” model is quite popular. It is available in three different color variations: “Midnight Blue,” “Hibiscus Pink,” and “Blue Dusk.” It is suitable for dogs with a back length of 33 to 107 centimeters.

This is also a water- and windproof coat that, due to its cut, offers additional protection for the neck, torso, and thighs. There are side buckles for the opening. The leash opening at the top of the coat is compatible with almost all harnesses. The outer material of this jacket differs from the models mentioned above, as it is made of a nylon ripstop with a PVC-free PU coating.

Hunter “Milford”

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a raincoat for your dog, you can opt for the “Milford” model from Hunter. It is available in blue or yellow and is suitable for dogs with a back length of 25 to 80 centimeters. The collar is not too high, and it essentially only covers the dog’s body.

The material is made of polyester, making the coat wind- and water-repellent. The belly strap is adjustable and equipped with a Velcro closure. There are also elastic loops for the hind legs. Additionally, there is an opening at the neck to leash the dog. However, unlike the other models, this is not equipped with a zipper but merely an open slit for the D-ring to pass through. Like the others, this dog raincoat is machine washable and can be washed at 30 degrees. Cost: between 19 euros and 38 euros.

  • inner and outer material made of polyester
  • suitable for washing machine (30 degrees)
  • available in blue and yellow
  • no reflectors
  • many different sizes
  • no zipper at the D-ring opening
  • adjustable belly strap
  • ergonomic fit
  • elastic loops for hind legs
  • Price: between 19 euros and 38 euros, depending on size

Bella & Balu

The last dog raincoat in the PETBOOK comparison is from Bella & Balu. There is no specific model name for the rain protection. It is also in the lower price segment and is listed as “Bestseller No. 1” among dog raincoats on Amazon. You can choose between a blue, gray, or orange variant. However, the size selection is limited. There are only standard sizes XS to XL. Since there are only five sizes, the coat may be a bit too large (or too small) for the dog. Accordingly, the price: the dog coat costs 19 euros, regardless of size.

The outer material is made of polyester with PVC coating and a mesh lining. Thus, the raincoat is wind- and waterproof as well as breathable. There is also a hood to provide additional protection for the dog’s head from moisture and cold. The neck and chest area are infinitely adjustable. Reflectors are also attached, as well as a hole (no zipper) for the leash and harness. However, there is one drawback: the coat is not suitable for the washing machine.

  • material made of polyester with PVC coating and mesh lining
  • only available in five standard sizes
  • available in blue, orange, and gray
  • infinitely adjustable neck and chest area
  • water- and wind-repellent
  • hood for additional protection
  • not suitable for washing machine
  • affordable coat in the listing at 19 euros
  • integrated reflectors

More on the topic

How Was the Selection Made?

It is important to mention that the listing is not based on individual tests but merely a product comparison or buying guide. The selection of raincoats was made based on reviews, bestseller lists, and personal experiences, as outlined above.

Since every dog is built differently and is unique, the above product comparison is not an absolute buying guide. The specified measurements are orientation values that can vary slightly or significantly. A dog may also resist wearing a raincoat. Therefore, the comparison should only be considered as a buying guide, largely based on subjective recommendations.

Conclusion of the Comparison

When choosing, it is important that all raincoats are water-repellent and also offer warmth protection. This generally applies to all the products mentioned above. The only difference may be in quality. If you want to purchase a good raincoat for your dog, you should spend a bit more. At least 60 euros is realistic. Comfortable fit, waterproofness, breathability, optimal lining for warmth, individual adjustability, and reflectors are the most important points. Almost all models are also machine washable.

There are no major deviations, but it should be noted that the Hurtta raincoat is recommended due to its recycled material. The Rukka model is also recommended because it offers special sizes for different dog types. However, if you don’t want to spend much money, the Bella & Balu product is sufficient. It generally meets the most important criteria but may present challenges in finding the right size.
