Crunchy and slightly spicy–for us humans, radishes are the ideal snack. But what about dogs? Can dogs eat radishes? PETBOOK explains and reveals what you need to consider.

Radishes are not just a snack for us humans. Many dishes revolve around the small, red-and-white bulbs. In summer, they are likely found in almost every household. This raises the question of whether we can share the spicy vegetable with dogs. Whether dogs can actually eat radishes and what to watch out for, you will find out here.

What Nutrients Do Radishes Have?

Radishes are composed almost entirely of water, making them very low in calories. They contain only 17 kilocalories per 100 grams. They provide small amounts of vitamin C and potassium, which can support the immune system.

  • Vitamin B1

  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin B9

Are Radishes Healthy for Dogs?

Due to their high water content, radishes are also suitable for overweight dogs. However, it depends on the dose, as radishes also contain mustard oils. Mustard oils are harmful to dogs and can even be fatal in some cases. High doses of mustard oil often cause gastrointestinal problems, bloating, and stomach pain in dogs. If your dog already struggles with stomach issues, you should completely avoid radishes in their bowl or as a snack.

Which Dogs Can Eat Radishes?

In general, all dogs can eat radishes. However, it is recommended not to feed the bulbs to puppies but to gradually accustom them to it, more on that later.

Make sure to feed radishes only in moderation–a maximum of one to two small bulbs per week for medium-sized dogs. If your dog shows signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, or bloating after eating radishes, you should definitely visit the veterinarian. 1

Also, in cases of allergies or food intolerances, it should first be tested whether the dog can tolerate radishes at all–preferably in consultation with a veterinarian.

Can Dogs Only Eat Raw Radishes?

We humans can do quite a lot with radishes: raw as a small snack in between, chopped in a salad, pickled, or even in soups. However, radishes should not be fed to dogs in processed form. Processed foods with radishes often contain too much sugar, oil, or salt. Even if you cook yourself, you should avoid offering your dog a processed bulb–what tastes nicely spicy to us is not a pleasant matter for a dog’s gastrointestinal tract.

If you prefer to offer your dog mild, easily digestible vegetables, options like cucumber, zucchini, or carrots are suitable. These are less spicy and gentler on the stomach. 2

Are Radishes Too Spicy for Dogs?

For some people, the pink bulbs are the ideal, even refreshing snack. Crunchy texture and a spicy taste–that’s typical radishes. Some radishes can be so spicy that you might first be inclined to take a deep breath and drink water. The reason for this is the so-called mustard oils.

In Short

Dogs can eat radishes in small amounts–but only raw, unseasoned, and infrequently. The mustard oils can cause stomach problems. To be on the safe side, it’s better to opt for mild vegetables like carrots or cucumbers.
