Can cats eat strawberries? Especially in summer, when these red fruits are in peak season, many cats show interest in this popular snack. But is it really safe for cats to nibble on them? PETBOOK asked expert Christina Wolf.

Some of you might know the situation: You’re sitting in the kitchen with a big bowl of strawberries, snacking on one after another. Suddenly, the cat is there, weaving around your legs and casting curious glances upward. But is it okay for cats to eat strawberries? And should you be concerned about the quantity? PETBOOK consulted veterinary assistant and cat coach Christina Wolf.
“First, the good news: Strawberries are not toxic to cats. So if your cat wants to nibble, she can. It’s not a problem,” says Christina Wolf. While she hasn’t seen it with her own cats, she has often heard that strawberries can be quite appealing to cats. “That’s why you should be cautious. Strawberries have some properties that could be unfavorable for cats,” warns the expert.
Why Cats Shouldn’t Eat Too Many Strawberries
Christina Wolf knows that strawberries contain a lot of fructose, which can lead to obesity or diabetes in cats. And that’s not the only reason to feed strawberries in moderation: “They also contain a lot of acid, which cats can’t tolerate well. It can even cause an upset stomach,” says Wolf.
“And generally, it’s important to remember that cats are carnivores by nature. Their digestion isn’t designed for purely plant-based food. If they eat large amounts of strawberries, they might have trouble processing them,” Wolf further explains.

How Many Strawberries Can Cats Eat?
“I would recommend feeding her at most half to a whole strawberry a day,” says the expert. “And if you do, make sure to wash the berry well beforehand. You never know what pesticides or chemicals might be on it.” Alternatively, you can give her organic strawberries or those from your own garden. “Not everyone has that option, but many people now grow strawberries in small planters on their balconies,” Wolf notes.

What to Watch for When Feeding
If you have homegrown strawberries and your cat shows strong interest, you should definitely keep an eye on her. And not just because of the aforementioned ingredients like fructose and acid. Christina Wolf emphasizes: “It’s also important that the strawberry is ripe before the cat eats it, otherwise it can upset her stomach. The leaves and stem contain oxalates, which can cause gastrointestinal issues.” So, be sure to remove the greenery.
To protect strawberries on the balcony or in the garden, a fine mesh net can be used to cover the planters.
Can Strawberries Be Healthy for Cats?
“Strawberries naturally contain many minerals, fiber, and a lot of vitamin C, which are positive attributes for us humans,” explains the expert. However, the fiber content can cause digestive issues if the cat isn’t used to it. “And cats don’t need vitamin C at all. Unlike us, they can produce it themselves and don’t need to get it from food,” Christina Wolf explains. While it’s not harmful to cats, strawberries don’t offer them any benefits either.
The Expert’s Conclusion: Even though strawberries aren’t part of a cat’s natural diet, they can enjoy them occasionally if they like. However, if they vomit or have diarrhea afterward, you should definitely consult a veterinarian.
