Guinea pigs are strictly vegan. They not only love plenty of greens but also fruits and vegetables, which can provide a tasty variety for the little rodents. But which types of fruits can guinea pigs eat?

Guinea pigs primarily feed on greens, including many grasses, herbs, and hay. Constant nibbling is important for their digestion, which requires a lot of fiber. It also helps wear down their teeth, which grow throughout their lives. However, the little rodents also enjoy a snack now and then. Find out which fruits and vegetables are particularly popular with guinea pigs.

Fruits Guinea Pigs Can Eat

Like humans, guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C in their bodies and need at least 10 mg daily to avoid scurvy. Therefore, fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C are particularly suitable for guinea pigs. It’s best to offer them the organic, pesticide-free variety. There are also some things to consider when feeding them.

Apples

100 g of apples contain up to 10 mg of vitamin C and folic acid. They also contain secondary plant compounds that guinea pigs can metabolize well. However, when feeding, make sure to remove seeds and cores completely, as apple seeds contain cyanide, which could be dangerous for guinea pigs.

Banana

Bananas are rich in carbohydrates and fiber but are also high in sugar and starch, especially as they ripen. Guinea pigs should not be given too much. A small piece of the yellow fruit is a tasty snack that the animals will appreciate.

Blueberries

The delicious blue berries are a true “superfood” for guinea pigs. They contain vitamins A, B, and E, as well as a high content of vitamin C and beta-carotene. They also contain tannins and fiber. A small handful of blueberries is a great health booster for guinea pigs.

Strawberries

The red summer fruits are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. However, since they contain relatively high sugar levels, you should not give your guinea pigs too much at once. One or two strawberries a week are a welcome treat in the summer.

Grapes

Grapes also provide a tasty variety and extra hydration on hot days. Guinea pigs can even eat the stems. However, for grapes that are not seedless, you should halve the fruits and remove the cores.

Oranges

Oranges contain up to 53 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. The white peel also contains flavonoids, antioxidants, and secondary plant compounds that guinea pigs can digest well. However, due to the high vitamin C content and fruit acid, this fruit should only be fed in moderation.

Fruit Types and Feeding Recommendations for Guinea Pigs

  • Pineapple:
Always offer fresh, peeled. Good for dissolving hairballs in the digestive tract.
  • Apple:
Do not feed waxed peel, contains many carbohydrates – therefore only in moderation.
  • Banana:
A great treat, but give only rarely, as it can cause constipation. Do not feed the peel!
  • Pear:
Very sugary and watery – offer only in small amounts to avoid diarrhea.
  • Strawberry:
Remove green stems beforehand. Otherwise, completely edible.
  • Rosehip:
Usable fresh or dried. A very good treat with lots of vitamin C.
  • Blueberry:
Not only the berries, but also branches and leaves can be fed.
  • Honeydew and Watermelon:
Remove peel and seeds before feeding. Lightly chilled in summer, a great additional water source.
  • Currant:
Feed in small amounts. Branches and leaves can also be given.
  • Cherry:
Remove the pit. NO deadly nightshade – these are deadly!
  • Kiwi:
    Peel. Supports the coat change.
  • Tangerine:
Remove peel and seeds beforehand. Suitable as a treat.
  • Grapes:
    Remove stem and seeds.

Vegetables Guinea Pigs Can Eat

Besides fruits, vegetables are also very popular with guinea pigs and contain many essential vitamins and minerals that the animals need in their diet. Another plus with vegetables is the fiber and plant fibers they contain.

Cucumber

Guinea pigs love cucumbers. They squeak with excitement as soon as they catch a whiff of freshly cut cucumber. Cucumbers contain a lot of vitamins B, C, and K, as well as potassium and iron, making them suitable for daily feeding. However, the pieces should not be too large, as too much cucumber can soften the animals’ droppings and the cucumber smell can extend into the urine.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are also universally popular with guinea pigs. However, caution is advised, as the plant and green parts are toxic to the rodents. If you give them vine tomatoes, remove the stems and carefully cut out the green parts. Depending on the size, you should also remove the seeds to prevent the guinea pig from swallowing them. Small tomatoes like Roma or cherry tomatoes are particularly suitable.

Bell Pepper

Guinea pigs also love bell peppers, which contain a lot of vitamin C and fiber. The core can be eaten, but the seeds should be carefully removed or rinsed off.

Celery

This leafy vegetable is great for supporting guinea pigs in their nibbling and is readily accepted by the animals. Especially in winter, it is advisable to provide fresh greens in addition to hay. It can also help with digestive issues.

Spinach

Fresh spinach leaves are also very popular with the little rodents. However, in addition to iron and vitamins, they contain oxalic acid and should only be fed in moderation, along with other fresh greens.

Iceberg Lettuce

Although iceberg lettuce contains very few nutrients, it is one of the most popular vegetables among guinea pigs. The leaves are usually munched enthusiastically and with dedication. It also contains a lot of beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A. However, you should not give more than one lettuce leaf per week and always check the freshness of the vegetable, as it turns brown quickly.
