Only a clean terrarium protects these popular reptiles from diseases and ensures they can behave naturally. An expert explains how owners can create a suitable environment with simple routines—and warns against common mistakes.
Bearded Dragon Terrarium Should Be Cleaned Regularly
After turtles and snakes, bearded dragons are among the most popular reptiles in German households. With their calm demeanor and curious nature, they captivate many terrarium enthusiasts. However, to stay healthy, these lizards need conditions that closely resemble their natural habitat—including suitable sunbathing spots, hiding places, appropriate nutrition, and a consistently clean environment.
Cleaning a bearded dragon’s terrarium can be divided into regular maintenance steps—some should be done daily, others weekly or at longer intervals. Dr. Axel Kwet, a biologist and managing director of the German Society for Herpetology and Herpetoculture (DGHT), offers some tips in a press release from the Pet Supplies Industry Association (IVH):
Daily Cleaning Tasks for Bearded Dragon Owners
- Remove feces and food remnants daily to prevent odors.
- Replace dirty or stale water in the drinking vessel to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.
- “This is also a good opportunity to check the bearded dragons for injuries or other abnormalities and ensure that the equipment regulates temperature, light, and humidity optimally. Observing the animals should ideally be done daily,” advises Dr. Kwet.
Other Regular Cleaning Tasks
- Weekly, inspect climbing structures and rocks for contamination. Surfaces and terrarium glass can be easily cleaned with warm water, and lime deposits can be removed with vinegar cleaner.
- Every two to three months, a thorough cleaning of decorations, hiding places, and technical equipment is necessary.
- Once a year, the substrate should be replaced.

Even though cleanliness is a top priority, it should not come at the expense of the animals. Bearded dragons are sensitive reptiles that can react to hectic movements or bright light with stress. Therefore, the cleaning process should be as calm as possible.
“If only feces are being removed or water is being replaced briefly, the animals can and should remain in the terrarium,” says Dr. Kwet. “It is crucial to stay calm, making slow and deliberate movements to avoid startling the lizards. Additionally, the owner should not suddenly blind their bearded dragons with bright light.”
For more comprehensive cleaning, the expert advises temporarily relocating the animals: In a well-ventilated fauna box, supplemented with a heat pack for warmth in winter, bearded dragons are safely housed. After cleaning, they should be gently returned to the terrarium. Although they get used to this short move over time, it always means stress, so the animals need sufficient rest afterward.

A well-structured cleaning plan significantly contributes to the health and well-being of bearded dragons. Those who take a few minutes daily and carry out the larger maintenance tasks at weekly to multi-month intervals create a stable and hygienic environment for the animals.
