Some animals look entirely different up close or reveal an unknown beauty. For our quiz, we’ve examined 11 of them closely. Can you identify which animals are hidden behind these close-up shots?

The skin of many animals looks like a colorful mosaic up close. But do the shimmering scales belong to a fish or a lizard? In nature, there are many structures that have been so successful that they have evolved multiple times across the animal kingdom. For example, tile-like scales are found not only on fish but also on the wings of butterflies. In our quiz, you must guess which animal is hidden behind each close-up. How many can you identify?

Animals in Close-Up–Who Is Who?

For our quiz, we focused mainly on close-ups of the skin of various animals. Sometimes, the beauty of certain species is only discovered through macro photography. This gives the images entirely different dimensions than simply enlarging a section of a picture. That’s also why many of our quiz images don’t have a “resolution image” showing the entire animal.

Photographing Animals in Close-Up? Here’s What You Need

Macro photography is especially suitable for the smaller animal inhabitants of our planet. What fascinates us about close-ups are the details that remain hidden to the naked eye.

However, this is hardly achievable with standard camera lenses, as they cannot focus sharply at short distances. Special macro lenses are needed for this. A tripod is also recommended, as the narrow depth of field otherwise cannot be placed correctly in the image.1

If you enjoy taking photos with your smartphone, you can use special lens attachments for close-ups of animals. However, you usually have to get very close to the subject, which is a challenge, especially with wild animals. But to capture your pet from different perspectives, it can be a real alternative to expensive photography equipment.
