Every year on October 10, World Dog Day is celebrated, also known as World Dog Day. On this date, the special role of dogs in our society takes center stage. They are not only considered loyal companions but also take on various tasks in everyday life—whether as therapy dogs, sniffer dogs, or simply as friends for life.

Germany Long Had Its Own “Day of the Dog”
Who originally initiated World Dog Day is not recorded. Nor is it known why October 10 was chosen as the date. Unlike the internationally recognized World Cat Day on August 8, neither the origin nor the exact creation of World Dog Day is documented.
It is noteworthy that Germany long had its own dog holiday: the “Day of the Dog.” This was initiated in 2010 by the German Kennel Club (VDH) and celebrated annually in June. Events such as open houses, dog sports tournaments, or breed presentations accompanied this day. However, in 2024, the VDH decided to forgo the Day of the Dog in favor of the more international World Dog Day on October 10.
How to Celebrate World Dog Day
Dogs have accompanied humans for millennia—originally as working animals in hunting or herding, today often as close emotional companions in family life. Many dogs perform valuable work: as guide dogs, in therapy, or with the police and customs. World Dog Day offers the opportunity to honor this commitment. This date reminds us how much more beautiful life is with a tail-wagging roommate.
If you want to make your dog happy, you can celebrate the day with an especially long walk or an extra dose of cuddles. Healthy treats or new toys are also well-received by our furry friends.
Moreover, World Dog Day can also be used to do good: for example, by donating to an animal welfare organization or by sponsoring a dog that doesn’t have a home. After all, don’t all dogs deserve our love every day?
