Many cat owners know it–the litter box is absolutely necessary, but simply not attractive. Here’s how to decorate a litter box and discreetly place it in a room.

It’s a common problem for many cat owners: litter boxes aren’t particularly decorative, but they’re necessary. No matter where it stands, the large plastic piece just doesn’t match the rest of the decor. However, there are attractive ways to at least partially hide the litter box–such as with a tile cabinet. myHOMEBOOK and PETBOOK, along with Susanne from “ikarusdoodle,” show how to easily build one yourself. A step-by-step guide is available in the video above.

Tile Cabinet for a Decorative Litter Box Hideaway–What You Need

If you want to make the job easier, you can use a ready-made cabinet or a shelf block for the litter box hideaway. You can also build it yourself from wooden boards. However, make sure the space inside the litter box is suitable for your cat’s size. For example, a Maine Coon needs significantly more space to feel comfortable in its covered litter box than a European Shorthair. Here’s what you need for a decorative litter box hideaway:

Materials

  • Cabinet
  • Litter box
  • Filler compound
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile mat

Tools

  • Sandpaper
  • Notched trowel
  • Scissors
  • Spatula

Hiding the Litter Box–Here’s How

Building a nice cover for the litter box yourself has the main advantage of allowing you to customize it in terms of size and appearance. Here’s how:

  1. First, use sandpaper to roughen the sides that will later be covered with tiles.
  2. Next, arrange the tile mats as a test and cut them if necessary.
  3. Apply the tile adhesive evenly and then use a notched trowel to create grooves in the adhesive.
  4. After that, you can stick on the tiles, wipe off excess adhesive, and then mix the grout according to the instructions.
  5. Use a spatula to roughly spread the grout over the tiles and wipe off the excess. Let everything dry thoroughly and wipe off the residue.
