For months, a product has consistently topped the bestseller lists in online retail—drawing curious looks from cat owners. What is behind the success of “Diamond Care Fresh”? Is the relatively high price justified or just clever marketing? PETBOOK editor Saskia Schneider conducted a practical test with two feline testers—with a result that surprises in one particular aspect.

What Is Biokat’s “Diamond Care Fresh” Supposed to Do?

The bentonite clumping litter “Diamond Care Fresh” from Biokat’s initially seems like a regular clumping litter to me, but it is advertised with several advantages. These include particularly strong odor control through activated carbon from renewable resources. Additionally, the litter is said to have a soothing effect on cat paws thanks to aloe vera. The fine granulation is supposed to allow for firm, flat clumps. The manufacturer also highlights the efficiency of the ten-liter package.

Practical Test Under Realistic Conditions

For comparison, I tested the litter for several days alongside my regular clumping litter—under identical conditions. Two open cat litter boxes without lids were used to assess odors as unaltered as possible.

Special attention was paid to various factors:

  • the behavior of the two cats with different habits (cat Sweety prefers to urinate at the edge),
  • the visibility of tracked-out litter using a white mat,
  • the odor control and
  • the dust development when filling and scratching.
  • The texture was also checked by a hand test.

Odor control: This Is Where the Litter Excels

In one aspect, the litter clearly stands out from many competing products: odor neutralization. I really wanted to know and placed one of the litter boxes openly in the bedroom. Even then, the odor was minimal. Even during cleaning, hardly anything was noticeable.

To detect any urine smell at all, I had to get really close to the clumps with my nose. For me, this is a significant difference from many other bentonite litters, where a urine smell hits you immediately during cleaning. The activated carbon included here shows its effect: Its large surface area can effectively bind odor-causing molecules.

The added baby powder scent remains very subtle and does not artificially cover anything. However, I don’t need this and am generally against artificial “fragrancing” of cat litter. My two cats, however, showed no adverse reactions.

Clumping: Solid, but Nothing Special

The litter impresses with reliable clumping. The formed clumps are stable and can be easily removed without disintegrating. Even with cats that prefer to urinate at the edge, like my Sweety, nothing stuck to the edge of the litter box.

However, I do not see a clear advantage over cheaper alternatives. The quality is on par with other high-quality bentonite litters—solid, but not superior.

Texture and Dust Development

The fine granulation provides a pleasant texture, also suitable for sensitive cat paws. During the test, the material felt soft, without sharp edges.

The litter is not completely dust-free, which is hardly realistic for bentonite. The dust development when filling was moderate. Sweety had to inspect the toilet shortly afterward and didn’t sneeze even once.

Aloe Vera? More Marketing Than Added Value for Me

The advertised care effect from the small aloe vera beads in the litter was not noticeable in the test. Neither on the hands nor on the cat’s paws was a difference detectable. The perceived “soft” texture is likely due to the fine bentonite content.

From a veterinary perspective, additional paw care through the litter is not really necessary. Not to mention that cats usually lick their paws clean after using the litter box.

Litter Behavior: No Difference From Other Fine Varieties

Like many fine-grained clumping litters, this product also ends up outside the litter box. However, I don’t see a big difference from my regular litter, which has a similarly fine granulation. This point is not really relevant to me, as almost every litter ends up on carpets and furniture at times.

My Assessment: Odor Control Is Particularly Convincing

While clumping ability, texture, and dust development are in the good average range, the litter stands out mainly due to its exceptional odor neutralization. This point is particularly relevant for many cat owners. Because those who keep their pets appropriately often have to place litter boxes in more frequented areas like the living room or bedroom. Here, good odor control is extremely advantageous.

Conclusion: Is the Higher Price Worth It?

The biggest advantage is clearly the strong odor control. Especially in apartments where the litter box is in the living room or bedroom, or for particularly odor-sensitive people, this can be a decisive factor.

Overall, it is a high-quality cat litter with a clearly noticeable odor advantage. However, the higher price remains a noticeable drawback—and should be weighed against the comfort gain.
